Weekly Wrap Up–Brrr, Again

We’ve had another full week here, and only one more to go before our next break.   The weather has been brutally cold again, so we have avoided being outdoors as much as possible.  Sadly, with all this harsh cold we haven’t had one decent snow fall this winter.   Hopefully that’ll change before spring.

Olivia received her acceptance letter to the John Lewis Society.   She’s thrilled beyond words!   The next three months will be her classroom training sessions.  Then she’ll work for 6 weeks, earning her costume.  Once that is complete she’ll be volunteering 2 days per month as a costumed interpreter at the museum.

Academics:

History:   We’ve just about finished our World War I Unit study.  We went out to a local cemetery to see a life size doughboy statue on one of the graves.  The statue was put up by the parents of Pvt. Russell Snyder, who passed away October 8, 1918…just a little over a month before the war ended.

Language Arts:  Olivia is working on a book report.  The book is also about WWI.  She’s currently learning the Doris Day song Till We Meet Again to go with her report.   Her love for history and musicals are an interesting combination at times.

Science: We’re studying sound, and had an experience that helped the girls understand sound waves. We were at basketball practice and two HUGE military helicopters flew over our building. They were pretty low to the ground. The sound was pretty intense, and actually caused the walls of the gymnasium to shake. I’m sure I’m not the only adult who had flashbacks to the movie Red Dawn.

Math: The “test day curse” once again hit both girls this week. They still scored high “C” but it’s crazy mistakes on tests that just drive me wild. I also shared this week on what math programs we’ve used over the years. You can read that article here.

Art:   We worked on a Grandma Moses style art project.

Lindsey’s basketball team is still undefeated.  This weekend they’ll play the most aggressive team in the league.  I’m a bit apprehensive about this game, just because of the huge size difference and the aggressiveness (read: excessively violent outbursts) of a couple of the kids on the other team.

That’s about it for our week.  Hoping you all have a great weekend!

    1. It's a great opportunity and she can stay with the program until 16. It'll look great on her transcripts, but also it's something she LOVES! Thanks for stoppng by!

  2. I hate the cold too. But since I have to go out to work in it everyday, I drag those little peeps out with me. Although, I did cut down on one additional sport the kids wanted to participate in because of the desire to stay in doors. However, my little guy has to get out the house daily or he gets grumpy.

    1. Between ballet, basketball and cheer we're still out of the house every day, sometimes several times a day, but we're avoiding trips to the store, park etc.
