Today, I'm sharing my review of the Bible study Connections: Genesis-The Revelation-Today by my friend and author, Debbi M. Hinton. I'm very proud of her for taking this project on, and excited to be sharing her book with you today.
When I hear the term "Bible study", what I typically think of is a cute little book, with fill in the blanks and a few "and how does that make you feel?" types of questions, followed by a three sentence prayer and some empty space for self-reflection. I'm truly not a fan of those types of "studies". That is absolutely NOT what this book is.
This is a fifty-five (55) lesson study that covers every book in the Bible. Hold on, before you think there's been a typo, or that I have no idea that there are 66 books in the Bible, and start leaving me nasty comments, let me explain. Books such as 1st & 2nd Kings & 1st & 2nd Chronicles are put together in one lesson. The smaller prophetic books (Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai, Zechariah & Malachi) are included in one lesson. Likewise, some New Testament books like 1st, 2nd & 3rd John are also included in one lesson. The term lesson is used loosely as these are lengthy and in depth, more like a chapter. There's my quick disclaimer.
At the beginning of each lesson, Debbi gives a little overview or insight and then goes directly into studying, bringing together scriptures from the current book and back up scriptures from other books of the Bible. For example, Lesson 1 is on Genesis and she starts off looking at verses 1-5, talking about light and then ties in other scriptures, asking you questions to make you think and connect the dots.
Debbi goes through each book, sometimes by chapter, sometimes by verse pointing out important tidbits and helping connect the dots along the way. There are lessons that are not broken down by chapter/verse, such as Lesson 17 - Proverbs, Lesson 18 - Ecclesiastes and Lesson 19 - Song of Solomon. Here, the author gives commentary and asks some overall questions.
What this book is not, is a quick 8 week fluffy study. Quite the contrary, it's a deep, long range study that's meant to help you study the Bible and see that it's not boring, irrelevant or out of date. If you've never read through the Bible, this is a great resource. If you have read through the Bible, it's still a great resource. You could use this as a group study, Sunday school class or individually, broken up by book.
This Bible study was a labor of love, and self-published. You'll find quirks like some typos, grammatical and punctuation errors. Ignore those (judgey much?) and glean from years of study and a love of the Word of God.
