Hello Fresh–Product Review

One of the new, current trends in our small town is being able to order local grown produce and meats and have a general location to pick up weekly.  (I’ve yet to do this.)   However not everyone lives in an area that has locally grown foods (think large cities), but that doesn’t mean you can’t get fresh produce delivered right to your front door thanks to a wonderful company called Hello Fresh.

Hello Fresh offers complete meals, and the recipes to go with them!  Seriously, a standard box has food for three meals (you pick either 2 or 4 people portions) and it comes in a wonderfully cold packed box to ensure stable temperatures.   Hello Fresh uses reputable suppliers to ensure quality products. Box prices start at $69.  Once you set up an account you can have weekly deliveries scheduled or you can pick and choose which weeks you do or don’t want deliveries  That way if you’re out of town you don’t have to worry about a delivery being made to your home.

The box itself is heavily insulated and has several frozen cold packs in it, so you don’t have to worry about your meats getting too warm during transport. I’m totally loving the “Caution: Contents May Be Extremely Delicious” graphic on the outside of the box!  When you open your box you’ll find all of your items packaged together by recipe and labeled so you know which things go with which recipe.

You’ll also find these wonderful recipe cards.  The front of the card shows you everything you need for each recipe.  Nutritional information per serving is also listed on the front of each card.

The back of the cards show you step-by-step instructions.

Hello Fresh 007

The first meal I created was Stuffed Squash with Cherry Balsamic Reduction.   The acorn squash was firm and a pretty good size.  The stuffing for the squash consisted of basmati rice (cooked in chicken stock), ground beef and fresh thyme.  The cherry balsamic reduction was made up of chicken stock, cherries, shallot and balsamic vinegar.  From start to finish the recipe took me about 50 minutes to prepare.

Truthfully, at first I thought there is no way this will make enough for fill up two hungry adults.  The rice/ground beef made a MUCH larger portion than I’d anticipated, so we ended up with leftovers.  Although the cherry balsamic reduction was full of flavor, the rest of the meal seemed a bit bland.   This may have been my fault in not having added enough (salt and pepper to taste) as the recipe card called for several times.   Overall though, the husband and I both enjoyed the meal. The nutritional info for this dish (per serving) was 604 calories, a crazy 69g of carbs, 28g protein, 17g fat and 5g fiber.

The second meal I cooked was the Apricot Glazed Turkey with Beets and Orzo.   Totally cooking time was around 45 minutes with WONDERFUL results.  This was by far my favorite meal, the sriracha gave it just enough kick and it went wonderfully with the sweetness of the apricot.

The nutritional information for this dish (per serving) is 548 calories, 51g carbs, 16g fat, 37g protein, 5g fiber.

My third, and final meal was Dill Crusted Tilapia with Sweet Potato & Cranberry Medley.  I was hesitant on this one because I’m not a big fan of fish, and I really don’t care for dill.   I was pleasantly surprised though as the fresh dill, fresh parmesan and Dijon mustard blended together to add an amazingly good flavor to the fish, without totally hiding the natural flavor of the fish.

Total cooking time was about 40 minutes.  Nutritional information for this meal (per serving) is 455 calories, 27g carbs, 21g fat, 25g protein and 4g fiber.

  1. These would be perfect for a young person just learning how to cook. The cards look like they have great instructions. I may purchase a box and let my daughter prepare the meals.

I just love the concept of the box! How cool. Thank you for the great review.
