The Do-It-All Mom! (Book Review)

We all know of "her"; the perfect homeschool mom, with perfect kids, the perfect home and the perfect business on the side.   We set her on a pedestal as our lofty goal to reach, and yet we fall short time and time again.   What, you ask, is her trick?  She's a juggler...not the kind you see at the circus either.

In "HomeWork Juggling Home, Work and School Without Losing Your Balance" you'll first realize that "she" doesn't exist.  However, as you read the stories of 14 real life moms, you'll find that each of us has our own perfect place as we follow God's plan for our lives, our homeschooling and our careers.

In this e-book from The Old School House, you'll hear how others have learned to successfully direct their special talent, interest or previous experience into the perfect fit that is right for their lives.  And somewhere, deep inside you'll come to realize that you too can juggle!

Insightful tips on record keeping, paper trails and much more await you in this 95 page e-book.  Included are 3 pages of websites for  legitimate home based businesses, research and much more.

Welcome to WeE! Books (Review)

Many of us are busy and despite our longing to read, we just don't have the time to plod through long books anymore.  But we love to read, and learn...so The Old School House has solved our problem!  Welcome the WeE-Book!  These are short (usually less than 20 pages) e-books that you can download and read in one sitting.  Don't let the size of the book fool you, they are chocked full of valuable information!   Here is a little appetizer for you.

"Are Parents Really Necessary? A Guide to Preschool Education"
by Amelia Harper

From the time our children enter the world, we begin to teach them life skills such as what to eat (what NOT to eat) when to sleep (we hope) and how to communicate.  As they get older we teach them how to walk, put on their socks and shoes and that ketchup and ice cream really aren't a good match.  Then suddenly they turn three and we are no longer capable of teaching any longer...or so we're led to believe.

Amelia Harper tackles this topic head on in her enlightening WeE-Book "Are Parents Really Necessary? A Guide to Preschool Education".  The author debunks common myths about he abilities and responsibilities of parents in the teaching and training of their young children.  Harper exposes the agenda of the National Education Association (NEA) in pushing for earlier public education for our three, four and five year olds.

The author includes information on what she considers the "Ten Important Educational Activities for Preschoolers"; and then goes a step farther by including printable worksheets for parents to use with their children in these 10 areas.

The information containted in "Are Parents Really Necessary? A Guide to Preschool Education" is a wonderful stepping stone for parents who are wanting to home school, but just aren't convinced that they are capable.  Unsupportive grandparents and family members may also benefit from the information packed into this liberating little book.

"Easy Fund-Raisers for Homeschool Organizations"
by Carol Topp

Is your homeschool co-op struggling to make ends meet and cover the cost of existing?  If so, Carol Topp has written a WeE-Book just for you!  "Easy Fund-Raisers for Homeschool Organizations" offers creative and lucrative ideas that can be applied in most home school group settings.  No room to store boxes of citrus fruit and candles after a sale?  Not to worry, Topp offers suggestions on fundraisers that require no selling, delivering or storing of products.  An added bonus is that Topp, a Certified Public Accountant also includes important tax information to keep everyone, including the IRS happy!

"Beating the Summertime Blues"
by Kim Kautzer

"Mom, I'm bored...hungry...hot...tired", you get the picture.  Multiply that picture by the number of kids you have and summer "vacation" can quickly turn into the longest three months of any mothers life!  In this creative and humorous WeE-Book, " Beating the Summertime Blues", Kim Kautzer offers simple and doable boredom busters.  Rising temperatures can often lead to rising tempers and the author gives a good selection of inside acitivies that can help keep everyone calm, cool and collected (even mom).

Spring

Spring is here and we're doing lots of fun stuff.  The girls built birdhouses and attached  them to our big tree in the backyard.  Here's a photo...

They also built rain gauges and put one in each flower bed...

Lindsey had her surgery this month as well....she did great and we go for her final post-op appointment this week, and hopefully she'll be released to go back to normal food this week.   So here are a few photos of her as well...feeling a bit "giddy" from all the drugs and pain meds...

And finally, my tulips are blooming and are gorgeous....so here is a photo of one of those as well.

Birthdays

Birthdays are just another day if there is no BIRTHDAY CAKE.   As a Mom, that usually means I need to buy and bake my own.  Each year (our 8 year anniversary is later this month as well) I make sure to comment about the importance of a birthday cake.  Last year I especially emphasized that since I do all the birthday cakes for the husband, kids, my family, my inlaws...that I don't want to be responsible for my own cake.  I specifically remember it being one of those moments of intense fellowship that one wouldn't expect a spouse to let slip.  Yeah...sure...right.

So, today I turned 41.  We had Lindsey's pre-op appointment with the ENT this morning.  Then we went to a pizza buffet for lunch (yippee) and then home and I've been busy on various projects ever since.  The cake mix and frosting are still in the kitchen.  There will be no cake this year...I'm not baking my own birthday cake.

I know, in the great scheme of life, its not important...at least not to anyone but me.  But honestly, it makes me cry...few things in life make me cry anymore and yet at 41, here I sit crying because there was no cake.  Stupid I know.

So anyway, Olivia turns 6 this month.  I sent out her party invitations and bought the decorations.   All that's left is the cake...oddly.  I found a pattern to make a really cool guitar shaped cake that she was super excited about.  Although, I think the Hannah Montana cake from Martins would probably be a bigger thrill to her.  Not sure which I will do yet, but this one thing I will guarantee.  THERE WILL BE A CAKE!!
