This year I’m teaching a geography based class called “Around the World”. We have a small class of only 5 girls, so I’m hoping to be able to do some more involved crafts later in the year.
For our first session I used Evan Moor’s Beginning Maps and Globes (which is no longer being sold, but our local book fair was selling them for 75 cents each. SCORE!) Each girl took home a completed workbook at the end of class.
We discussed the difference between a globe and a map. We also discussed the difference between a physical map and a political map.
We learned about the seven continents, the oceans, the compass rose, north, south, east and west and latitude and longitude. We did some fun treasure maps where the girls had to follow directions and use the compass rose to get to their destinations We also did a few harder maps using longitude and latitude.
At the end of class each girl created a puzzle of the seven continents, and then we had a race to see who could put the world back together again.
We’re off to a great start for the new year!
