I love it when I get to review non homeschool products. Don’t get me wrong, I love my homeschool freebies, but we really do other things besides hit the books. I was really happy to be asked to review a line of dog training collars. Secretly, I’d hoped for one of those really neat collars that zap the dog when they bark too much, ahem. However, the glow in the dark one was still pretty nifty.
The Safe Glow dog collar is made of wear-resistant nylon and houses a flexible, light-transmitting polymer core that illuminates when the collar is turned on. A reflective stripe adds additional safety by providing passive reflectivity. The collar is powered by a super-efficient (100,000 hour) LED bulb.
The LED bulb in Safe Glow has three different settings:
1. Steady glow
2. Slow flash
3. Fast flash
The collars come in three sizes (S, M, L) and you can either measure your dog’s neck, or just pick their breed from the list associated with each size.
To be honest, the fast flash almost sent my dog into some form of seizure. The fast flash is not super fast, but it really caused the dog to flop around on the ground like a fish. Maybe my dog is just weird like that? The slow flash didn’t seem to phase him, nor did the steady glow. So a word of caution, if you’re dog has seizures or is easily freaked out, don’t use the flashing lights.
The photo below shows Shalom wearing the collar with the steady glow turned on. This of course was after the whole flopping around incident, so as you can tell he was a bit uneasy.
The next photo looks weird, but is the dog zipping by, wearing the collar with no flash or extra light in the area. As you can see it’s pretty bright, and even though you can’t tell it’s on a dog, it would alert drivers (or freak them out). Our yard is a bit over an acre in length and we can easily spot him from that distance.
The collars are water resistant, but not fully water proof. I’m not sure where the boundaries are between the two. Since my dog isn’t a swimmer, I think we’re safe. He has been outside in the rain and I haven’t noticed any diminished performance.
Here’s a photo of the collar, without the dog. As you can see the light goes all the way around, with the exception of where the clasps are in the back. I also REALLY like the fact that the hook for the leash is affixed in a way that the leash will stay to the top of the dogs neck instead of sliding all around.
Overall I was really pleased with the Safe Glow LED Dog Collar. The only thing I didn’t like was it came without instructions. It took me a bit to figure out how to turn it on and to change through the three light settings. If/when the batter ever dies, I won’t have a clue how to change it either. I’d highly recommend this product to anyone who jogs or walks with their dog at night.
