Saturday, Olivia was up early to head out to a horse leg dissection class that was being held at a local blacksmith's shop. Most of the photos she took were pretty graphic, so I'll just share one that is a bit more mild. Olivia is the one in the brown hoodie, doing the dissection.
On Saturday evening we went to my brother's annual "Great Pumpkin Party". We had a bonfire, roasted hot dogs and marshmallows and watched "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" in the outdoor theatre. Great fun with family and friends.
Monday we dissected pumpkins. Ok, fine, we carved pumpkins...but it had the same end result as a dissection, grins. The conversation was interesting enough as they discussed why they were designing their specific artwork. Olivia commented that "Scar is my favorite villain, I mean, yeah, he killed his sibling and all, but he's still my favorite." Lindsey immediately replied "I'll be sleeping with one eye open from now on." Lots of laughing ensued.
Tuesday the electric company sent a crew out to remove our big pine tree from their power line easement. While this was a beautiful tree, we've been concerned for some time that in a bad storm it might come down on our house or the neighbors house. We just didn't have the financial resources to pay to have it taken down. The fact that the power company removed it at their expense was a blessing to us. Here are before photos, so you can see how big and full the tree was. You can barely see our house peeping out from behind the tree.
Here are the after photos. It is safer, but just looks so bare, and the front of the house is so open to the road now. The husband likes it, the kids and I do not. We'll be putting some type of slow growing ornamental tree in that general area come spring.
Wednesday was a pretty normal day. Academics went smoothly. The weather turned gray and blustery with showers in the late afternoon. Olivia had an interns meeting at church and Lindsey worked on her newest jigsaw puzzle.
Thursday was of course Halloween. We worked on academics early on, then headed out to order Olivia's class ring. I know some people don't do rings anymore, some do. She wanted one and we got it for her, so please no "that's out of date" snarky comments, ok? Interestingly enough, in the evening severe weather moved into our area, with high winds, tornado watches/warnings, and lots of tree damage. I don't believe in coincidence, so the fact that our risky tree came down two days before the storms shows me that God was looking out for us ahead of time.
Friday morning we woke to temperatures in the low 30's, quite a change from Thursday's toasty 70's. The beautiful leaves were, for the most part, gone. Lindsey headed off to her first cold day at the museum for the year, and Olivia bundled up to head to the farm. They both worked on their school work before they left, and finished up when they got home from their various jobs. I spent the morning chauffeuring everyone around, getting groceries and doing laundry.
I hope you've all had a great week.
No mention of the weenie roast ? Gah !
ReplyDeleteWe had some pretty nasty storms ripping through our area last night too an while I don't think we had any official tornado warnings I was up most of the night worried about them; the wind was that bad and I could hear/feel it buffeting the house from all sides. We woke up to clearer skies this morning but all of our leaves are pretty much gone now.
ReplyDeleteToo funny about the pumpkin carving being like a dissection! The pumpkins turned out great! It's a shame to lose a big beautiful tree like that, but I'm sure you feel much safer. Especially with the storms that followed!
ReplyDeleteI love that you got Olivia a class ring! I absolutely would have purchased one for my daughter if she'd wanted it. Thanks for linking up at Homeschool Highlights!
We were not so fortunate with the tree issues. A neighbor's tree hit our back house Halloween night. Ugg. I love your jack o lanterns. They came out great. Your daughter is a brave dissector.
