Parents Rising (Book Review)

Parents Rising - 8 Strategies for Raising Kids Who Love God, Respect Authority and Value What's Right is by far the best parenting book I've read in ages!  Author Arlene Pellicane does a wonderful job of addressing today's parenting crisis.  In fact, this is one of those books that every parent, or parent want to be should read...it's THAT important.
In the beginning of the book is a quick quiz to help you determine how healthy your home and family relationships are.   Healthy as in the sense of parental authority and child rearing, not as in how many fruits and veggies do you eat (although that is mentioned at some point).

Following the quiz are eight chapters, each covering one of the eight strategies for raising kids.   These eight are as follows:
  • Amusement Is Not the Highest Priority
  • Parents Call the Shots
  • Routine and Boundaries Provide Security
  • The Bible and Prayer Every Day
  • Marriage Takes a Front Seat
  • Good Food Served on the Table
  • Love is Spelled T-I-M-E
  • Launching Adults, Not Babying Children

At the end of each chapter there is a Parent Rising Question, Parent Rising Prayer and a Parent Rising Action Step.   These questions, prayers and action steps give you clear insight and action to get from where you are to where you need to be in parenting.   There's also a group discussion section in the back that would make this a wonderful book for small group sessions.

In today's world of let the kids rule and try to appease them as much as possible, this is a pretty radical book.  However, as far as parenting goes, these are some pretty basic, time honored approaches that today's parents have let slip, much to the disservice of the child, family and society as a whole.

I highly recommend this book for parents of all ages and stages.   We need to get back to parenting instead of enabling and crippling our kids!
