Home Art Studio–Product Review

I admit it, art is one of those subjects that gets pushed to the back burner with me.  There are two reasons this happens, 1) I confused art with “crafty cheesy stuff” and 2) I don’t know anything about art (only “crafty cheesy stuff”).   So when Lindsey Volin of Home Art Studio approached me about reviewing her art curriculum, I almost said no.   Boy I’m glad I didn’t!!

We are reviewing the 2nd grade curriculum, which is a bit ahead of Lindsey’s art level, and a bit behind for Olivia’s.   However, both are LOVING it, and doing a great job.  Truth be told, I’m loving it too, because Ms. Volin is teaching me what to do with different types of art supplies.

Each grade level has a theme, and the 2nd grade theme is “Fairy Tales” (the fact that we’re studying knights and castles is a coincidence, but a bit plus as we try to replicate the castle she has in the background.) On the DVD, Ms. Volin reads a fairy tale, and then walks you step by step through creating a piece of art to go with the story.  Each lesson has a listing to the National Standard, materials list, tips for parents, vocabulary, step by step instructions and a video that allows you to bring the instructor into your home, and pause her when necessary!

The girls have made, and used a color wheel as they pick out colors for their projects.

They’ve learned more about drawing, and layering in the last couple of weeks than ever before. We’ve seen what a big difference watercolor paper makes instead of using cheap copy paper.  (Like I said, I knew NOTHING about art supplies and techniques.)

The girls and I have really enjoyed the different techniques we’ve used during each lesson.  Yes, I say we, because my husband and I have been doing some of the lessons with them.  It really is fun!

The girls have also learned about artists like Claude Monet, and Georgia O’Keefe.   Here is Olivia’s version of “The Bridge” and Lindsey’s O’Keefe inspired 3-d flower.

When ordering from Home Art Studio you can see a list of the art supplies you’ll need, so you can shop locally, or you order a complete supply kit at the time you order your art DVD.  There is also a place to submit photos of your child’s artwork!

Currently Home Art Studio has a DVD set for each grade K-5. The price of $29.99 per grade is awesome considering you have a real art teacher for roughly 22 lessons throughout your school year! You and your child will learn to use a variety of art supplies and techniques at your own pace, no more half completed projects for the slowest working artist in the family!

Honestly, I LOVE this program and plan to add it to our list of curriculum choices for our upcoming year!
