When Kids Call the Shots–How to Seize Control of Your Darling Bully and Enjoy Parenting Again–Book Review

Are your kids controlling you, or even bullying you?  If so, then When Kids Call the Shots – How to Seize Control of Your Darling Bully and Enjoy Parenting Again by Sean Grover may be of help to you.

book cover

Sean Grover, LCSW, author of When Kids Call the Shots, has worked in child development and adult psychotherapy for 20 years, and maintains one of the largest private group therapy practices in the U.S. He has been quoted in Newsweek, New York Magazine, NPR, and elsewhere about parent-child relationships….and um, well he had to go to a therapist to figure out how to handle his own child, ahem.

Now, I have to admit that my kids are well behaved and pretty obedient, so I can’t say “boy this book saved our family”…because it didn’t.   However, I can say that Grover has a lot of good ideas, and common sense approaches to not only getting control of your kids, but most importantly helping you to see what caused the problem in the first place.   Parental burn out, different bullying styles and the light and dark side of your parenting are addressed as well.

This is one of those books that have you looking back at your childhood and your parents and seeing how your upbringing is impacting your parenting.  This is not a “it’s all my mother’s fault” type book, although it does point out how our parents (or lack of) are impacting our families, and what to do about it.

For those of you who are uber sensitive, there are several minor curse words as in the phrase “what the…..?”     Buddhism is also mentioned, only from the standpoint that they were at a Buddhist New Year’s event during one of his child’s outbursts.   So there is my disclaimer on that.

Pros:   A lot of the ideas given are helpful and would be relatively easy to implement.   Buying the book is a lot cheaper than going to therapy or counseling, although those options may still need to happen.

Cons:  There is little to no mention of discipline, and in some places, Grover says it’s the worst thing to do.  Looking at the out of control world we live in, I think  lack of discipline has already proven to be a failure.
