Weekly Wrap Up - Captive to Corona

The culture and climate of our area, nation and the world has changed pretty rapidly over the last week. Some of the changes are trivial, some are seeming pretty daunting.  Fear continues to be the driving force in most of what I'm seeing and hearing.  We are taking the position that we continue with life as normal, using common sense (we washed our hands before it was a "thing") and trying to not allow the fear mongering to affect us.   Saturday was still relatively normal here in our area, so we actually went to get Olivia's homeschool prom dress.  Ignore the bad hair, but the dress is pretty.
Virginia schools all closed and are not scheduled to open for at least another week.  Churches have all pretty much shut down and along with that, all of the girls babysitting work is currently on hiatus as well.  All the libraries, live theater productions and movie theaters have closed, as well as museums, the bowling alley and many locally owned stores.  Toilet paper, paper towels, bleach and fresh meat/dairy are all hard to come by here as well.

Monday on the blog, I shared my post about our Sophomore Curriculum Picks.  My younger brother was supposed to have his open heart surgery, but that ended up getting postponed.  The hospital he's at also went into a mini lockdown as they stopped all visitations indefinitely.   Lindsey had an orthodontist appointment at 11:15, we were one of the only patients who kept their scheduled appointment so we were in and out pretty quickly.  Her next appointment got pushed out to 8 weeks away.   The girls continue to work independently on academics.   The announcement came that the homeschool prom for April 24 was cancelled.  You know, the one we got the dress for on Saturday, sigh.

Tuesday my brother went into surgery just before 9am.  Things went really well and everything is progressing normally, thank God for that!  Now that group gatherings can be no more than 10 people, and with our governor giving the police authority to enforce that, we had to make the decision to cancel our senior banquet for next weekend.  The head count would have been 30.   Somehow, one of the mother's took that decision personally and has become an issue for the group, and has gotten quite ugly about it.  There's always one, right?    I made a St. Patrick's Day feast of corned beef, cabbage, soda bread and an Irish apple cake for dessert.  The girls knocked out their school work pretty early and I worked on lesson plans for upcoming weeks.  The weather was nice, so we took a walk in the afternoon.  Lindsey worked on a cross stitch project until the daylight started to fade.  We had a Mancala and Pick Up Sticks game night.

Wednesday was a regular school day for us, nothing exciting.   My husband and I did have an obligation at church in the evening, the kids stayed home.

Thursday I headed out to go grocery shopping.  I found that Walmart is pretty sparse in their food section.  I went to Kroger and found everything I needed, even though some items are being rationed (sugar, eggs, milk, bread, meat, paper products, feminine hygiene products, bar soap and over the counter medicines).  I went ahead and bought a cake mix, frosting ingredients and ice cream for Olivia's birthday (4/25) in case things continue to go down hill, mom priorities ya'll.   The weather was beautiful again so an afternoon walk was in order.  We had a Bananagrams marathon after dinner, I'm still the reigning champion after all these years.

Friday it's supposed to be near 80 hear.  The plan is to open up the windows and air out the house and do some deep cleaning and laundry.  If the weather holds, we may even get the firepit out once the sun goes down.

Blast From the Past

Since there seems to be a lot of nothing going on these days due to all the shut downs.  I thought I'd share a few recipes for homemade play dough that your kids (and even you) might enjoy.  You'll probably find that you have most of the ingredients in your pantry.

Peppermint Playdoh, Pumpkin Spice Playdoh, Kool-Aid Playdoh,

Have a great weekend.  Stay healthy and try to get a little fresh air over the weekend...from a distance of course, wink.

  1. That is a beautiful dress! We had just bought my oldest daughter's prom dress as well, and now their prom is "postponed". My two public schooled kids are out of school until August. Life has changed a lot in a week!

  2. So sorry to hear the prom was cancelled; it was a beautiful dress. Groceries have been pretty tough here as well and most stores aren't putting out any restrictions so we just hope we can find what we need on that day and have been learning to make do without much of the time. We went for a hike today too and have been any day that it's not rainy or snowy/cold.

  3. What a beautiful dress. I hope she can use it for a special event or postponed prom. We are living through historic times. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
    Blessings, Dawn
