Weekly Wrap Up - The One Year Mark

Saturday, for now, is the busiest day of our week.  Olivia works the morning shift at 2 farms before heading to jiu-jitsu at 10am, then she works the afternoon and evening shifts back at those same two farms.  Lindsey goes to jiu-jitsu as well and then also has a babysitting gig from 6-8pm.   We ended up having a really late dinner on Saturday evening because of the overlap of Olivia's last shift and Lindsey's babysitting.

As promised, here's a photo of one of Olivia's horses at the new far.  There is no camera trickery here.  Olivia is 5'4" tall, so that gives you an idea of how big this draft horse is.

Sunday morning the alarm went off at 4:45am, and that spring forward hour really was a kick in the hiney.  We were home by 7am, then back out the door at 8:30 to head to the early service at church.  We got home a little after 10am and I fixed us some Belgian waffles for breakfast and we had some down time before heading back to the afternoon feeding.   Lindsey babysat from 3-5pm, and then we were all home for a nice family dinner.  Since it was pi day, (3/14), I made a lovely apple crumble pie for dessert.

This week is the one year mark of our state shutting down for the pandemic.  As a homeschool family, I think we were in position to not be as affected as much as other folks.  The biggest change for us was that extra curricular activities and outings with friends got cancelled, and church was closed for a few months.   We've continued to visit grandparents, aunts and uncles and close friends, and celebrate birthday and holiday family events.   Thankfully, Tom's not missed any work due to the pandemic, even though his overtime was cut drastically, which was a big impact on our budget.  Since the beginning, I've been socking all that stimulus money away in our savings, and this week I was able to pay off our car, Lindsey's braces and the credit card bill in one swoop!  We are coming out of this in far better shape than we were going into it.  God is good, all the time!

Monday in the homeschool world it was another normal day.  Both Olivia and Lindsey were off work, so we had a relaxing day at home to do lessons and housework.  We actually had some sleet and snow showers move through the area late in the evening.

Tuesday was Lindsey's long nanny day.  She was up around 6am, completing her geometry curriculum for the year, before heading out to babysit.  Olivia and I ran errands and worked on some driving skills for her.  She learned how to operate the gas pump to fill up the car, successfully get through a bank drive-thru window and navigate a round-about while we were out.  We picked up some gardening supplies and picked up a few items at the grocery store.   The evening wrapped up with regular jiu-jitsu class.

Wednesday morning Olivia worked at the farm #2 early, then headed straight to farm #3. Lindsey worked 10:30am-1:30pm babysitting.  I had a solemn errand to run, and was gone most of the time that Lindsey was working.  Academics got completed along the way.  Church wrapped up our evening.

Thursday Lindsey worked from 9:30am-1:30pm.  She got up early and had all of her school work finished before she left, and even cleaned her room.  We dropped her off at work and then Olivia and I went to test drive another vehicle.  She and I headed off to get groceries and drive through a few used car lots.   We had heavy rains move through late in the evening, but nothing like the deep south experienced.  Jiu-jitsu wrapped up our evening.

Friday Olivia had to work at farm #1 for the 5:30am feeding, then 8am at farm #2.  Lindsey worked on her lessons, and then at 10:30 I took her to her orthodontist appointment. Olivia worked the afternoon feeding at farm #1 and then Lindsey babysat from 1:30 to 3:30pm.  In the evening, Olivia headed off for her last week of recreation league volleyball.

I hope you've all had a great week.  Spring begins this weekend, try to get outside and enjoy it (weather permitting).

  1. Your pie looks delicious! I have often thought that we fared far better than other families as well in that not a whole lot changed for us with this pandemic either other than a few extra curricular activities. We've been stocking away our stimulus checks too and talking about buy a new (well, to us anyway) car and trading my old one in. Alec and I were just joking that the transition to high school has been so easy since it's like he's homeschooling 1/2 the time anyway with all the online classes.

  2. We have been fortunate too. We have been using the stimulus to do lots of work around the house. Our house is going to be in much better repair. Have a good week.
    Blessings, Dawn
