21 Myths (Even Good) Girls Beleive About Sex (Book Review)

I'll admit, up front, that agreeing to review 21 Myths (Even Good) Girls Believe About Sex by Jennifer Strickland was out of my comfort zone.   Not because I'm a prude, I just know that the title alone will get caught in a lot of search engines, ahem.   So, if you've come here looking for anything graphic or trashy, you should stop reading now.

21 Myths, is written with a Christian world view that abstinence and purity are God's best for us before marriage.  (I heartily agree!)   While the title may sounds as if there are some "taboo" subjects covered, that's not the case.   This is more of a guide to help you see some of the pitfalls on premarital sex (STD's, unwanted pregnancy,  soul times with your "partners" etc.)

What Strickland doesn't do is come across as if you've committed the unpardonable sin if you do fall, or leap willing into bed outside of marriage.   She points out God's willingness to forgive, and heal and help us to step back into a place of abstinence after the fact.    She also tackles the topics of shame, guilt and regret and the oh.so.human response of labeling others (and ourselves) as bad or good based on our standing.

Throughout 21 Myths, Jennifer uses real life stories of people who have walked through oh so many different scenarios.  From the college student who had an abortion, to the couple who waited until after marriage, to the promiscuous teen who reclaimed her purity.   Every person's story is different, but the author points out that regardless of the beginning, each can have a happy ending, through Christ and what He's done for us.

I would suggest this book be for the older teen girl, or one who is beginning to date.  Of course if you have a younger girl who has already made choices she regret, the Biblical truths provided can be of great benefit to her as well.   The book isn't hard to read, or graphic in any sense, but younger teens may just not be ready for it, and that's totally ok!!
