Weekly Wrap Up - Long Week

It's been a long week here.  Monday was one of those days where I totally lost my mom composure and had a complete fit of carnality.   This is a classic sign of too many irons in the fire, a poorly written algebra curriculum and a hormonal teen.  Doesn't that paint a lovely picture for you all?  Just keeping it real ya'll, it's not always sunshine and butterflies over here.

As promised, I did take photos of the girls archery class last week.   They are both doing really well, and are starting to use smaller targets (like stickers) on the big target.

As you can see in the photo above, we need to invest in an arm guard for Olivia.

Olivia has been working on a few science labs this week.   We've done the traditional stalk of celery in red water, a white carnation in several colors of water and are starting our sweet potato.

Interestingly enough, we had a terrible time finding a white carnation for this one experiment.   I went to every grocery store in town (they all have floral shops), then to a florist in the middle of town, and they were closed for whatever reason.   Then I took Olivia to a little out of the way shop where she finally found one.   I sent Olivia in to buy the flower, and she came out maybe 10 minutes later (I was starting to worry) with a carnation and her money.   The older lady who was running the store told Olivia that she enjoyed talking to her, and that because she'd been so polite and pleasant she just couldn't charge her for the flower.   I thought that was really sweet on several levels, so if/when we do need to purchase flowers, I know where we'll go to get them.

Lindsey is almost finished with her Middle Ages study.  She made a game board this week, and she and I have been playing "Journey Through the Middle Ages" a couple of afternoons.  It's been really fun, and I've been really happy to see that I've been able to pull a great deal of information out of the dark recesses of my own brain.
The girls and I will spend all day Saturday working a fundraiser/concession stand at a basketball tournament.  Neither of the girls are playing in the tournament, but we've been guaranteed a pretty substantial chunk of change for science equipment for the new co-op we're starting this fall.

We had crazy winds here the end of the week.  Several buildings had the roof ripped off, and lots of downed trees and damaged vehicles from the falling trees.   Tomorrow, snow is in our forecast!   I'll be interested to see if that actually happens.

In case you missed it, I shared my version of Preparing for High School on the blog earlier this week.   I hope you'll find some useful information there.

I hope you all had a good week (hopefully you didn't lose your cool like I did).   Here's to a good weekend for us all and a better week coming up!

  3. We had a difficult time finding a white carnation years ago for the same experiment. Ouch! That arm look sore.

    1. Funny how the "easy" labs are the hardest to find items for!

  4. Oooh, I remember bruises like that when I took archery so long ago. :) How lovely of the flower shop owner to give your daughter a flower for her sweet nature. How lovely of your daughter to be so sweet!

  5. Yes, looks like arm guards would be a very good idea! How sweet that the florist gave your daughter the carnation. That would be a shop I would patronize in future as well. Thanks for sharing about your week on Homeschool Highlights!
