Habakkuk: Remembering God's Faithfulness When He Seems Silent (Book Review)

Today, I'm sharing my review of Dannah Gresh's new Bible study Habakkuk: Remembering God's Faithfulness When He Seems Silent.

The book itself is paper back, with a textured cover that feels good in your hands.  The print throughout is black and purple, including the illustrations.  I may be a bit partial because I love purple, but it seems to be very easy on the eyes and is kind of soothing.

This is a 6-week Bible study that lends itself easily to individual or group study.  There are two distinctive parts to the study.  Part 1: How to Pray When You're Devastated and Part 2: How to Hear God Through Hurt.   Each part is then divided into 3 weeks, with a podcast to accompany each week.  I really like the podcasts, and the element of interaction it brings to the study.  Within each week are 5 days of meditation/study.

Week 1: Remember to Wrestle
Week 2: Remember to Look for God's Work
Week 3: Remember to Embed Questions with Truth
Week 4: Remember to Watch
Week 5: Remember to Fear
Weeks 6: Remember to Sing

As you may have guessed, this study is not for when you're necessarily feeling on top of the world.  It's a study for when you feel like your world may have crashed down around you.   Now obviously, you can also use this study if you're having a mountain top experience too.

Interestingly enough, the author finished writing the book in January 2020, on the day she heard about the novel coronavirus beginning to infect people in China.  The podcasts were recorded in September 2020, and the timing of the whole thing is pretty spot on considering how most of us are feeling with this whole situation and the craziness that has ensued.  Likewise, the particular topic of study is very applicable to where we are currently, how we as individuals and as the body of Christ need to respond.  There are some very clear parallels drawn, and I'm not even sure that the author fully grasped that realization when she was writing this devotional.

I really like that there's several pages to each days reading, including scriptures from other places in the Bible to back up and expound on what is being discussed.  (I hate short little devotions that say nothing.)  There's a timeline in the back that you can fill in as you go, maps and lots of room for journaling, writing prayers and making notes.   I LOVE that it's applicable to today in so many ways!
