Ya'll, I just love the name of this book - "Why Some Animals Eat Their Young - A Survivor's Guide to Motherhood" by Dallas Louis. The title just sucked me in, and I literally sat down on a Sunday afternoon and read through the whole book, with several outbursts of laughter as I read. I truly think this has been the most enjoyable thing I've read in ages, and I read a LOT!
If you have a sense of humor like mine, you are going to absolutely love this book. If you tend to be the type that's a bit more tightly wound, you might not find it as amusing as I did. However, despite your sense of humor (or lack thereof), there is a great deal to be learned from this author and her unique style of writing in this book!
First of all, this is not a "12 steps to raising the perfect kids" book. Rather it's the exact opposite, pointing out just how squirrelly raising kids can be. This is where the humor comes in. Dallas doesn't try to make her house and family seem perfect, she really lines out for you how messed up things can be, on a regular basis.
Despite her humor, and the large amount of trips she made to the ER and orthopedic surgeon with her three kids, the author does work a lot of great information into the book. She shows you examples of how to be consistent with your kids, even in the middle of the mess and how to still win the war, when the little battles go a bit awry. Did you know it's ok to get help from you adult friends, the ones that your kids respect, when it comes to issues of respect?
I've actually added this book to Lindsey's reading list for this year. She works as a nanny for two separate families, and plans to be a mom to many little ones. This book will give her a laugh as she relates to some of the more challenging kids on her watch, but more importantly, it'll give her some great tips on how to be better at her nanny job and her future mothering.
